Overview
The Format Section contains several properties that affect person entries.
Properties
Format
The Format property determines the structure of the person entries. Gedcom Publisher supports multiple output Formats.
Choose one of the available formats from the Format pull-down menu. For a description of the Formats supplied with Gedcom Publisher, see the list of Available Formats.
Users who want to define their own Format should contact me for more information.
Tag Sentence
The Tag Sentence property determines which sentence is used to construct the text output from a Body Tag. The options are:
- Use Tag Sentence
- Gedcom Publisher will use the sentence defined in the tag type for the person's role. If there is no sentence defined, the tag will not appear in the output.
- Use Tag Sentence or Default
- Gedcom Publisher will use the sentence defined in the tag type for the person's role. If there is no sentence defined, Gedcom Publisher will use the Default Sentence.
- Use Default Sentence
- Gedcom Publisher will use the the Default Sentence.
Default Sentence
The Default Sentence property holds the sentence that Gedcom Publisher uses when Tag Sentence is set to Use Default Sentence or Use Tag Sentence or Default and it needs a default sentence.
The Default Sentence is shown below, but you may edit it.
<[D:NP]><[+:; ][PO:NP]><[+:; ][L:NS]><[+:; ][M]><[+:; ]W:[WO]>
That sentence includes:
- The tag date,
[D:NP]
, no prefix such as "on" or "in" - The other principals,
[PO:NP]
, no pronoun substitution - The location,
[L]
- The memo,
[M]
- The other witnesses,
[WO:NP]
, no pronoun substitution
All the items after the date include "[+:; ]
" to insert a semi-colon and a space before the item to separate the value from any previous text.
Period and Paren
The Period and Paren property determines where Gedcom Publisher adds a period when the sentence output ends with a ')' character. When set to Period Before, Gedcom Publisher adds the period before the paren. When set to Period After, Gedcom Publisher adds the period after the paren.
If a period is already present in the output either before or after the paren, Gedcom Publisher will not add a period and will not modify its position.
Setting | Output |
---|---|
Period Before | (This text is at the end.) |
Period After | (This text is at the end). |
Period and Quote
The Period and Quote property determines where Gedcom Publisher adds a period when the sentence output ends with a quote character. When set to Period Before, Gedcom Publisher adds the period before the quote. When set to Period After, Gedcom Publisher adds the period after the quote.
If a period is already present in the output either before or after the quote, Gedcom Publisher will not add a period and will not modify its position.
Setting | Output |
---|---|
Period Before | "This text is at the end." |
Period After | "This text is at the end". |

Narration | The Narration Format renders tags in narrative form. It uses two-column tables for other content, such as the Parent Section. |
Bullets | The Bullets Format uses lists with a graphic "bullet". The tag list starts with the tag label (for principals) or the subject's role (for witnesses). |
Bullets Unlabeled | The Bullets Unlabeled Format uses lists with a graphic "bullet". Unlike the Bullets Format, the label or role is omitted. |
Two Columns | The Two Columns Format shows the information for a person in two columns. Column one on the left has a label. The right-hand column has the other information for a tag. |
Three Columns | The Three Columns Format shows the information for a person in three columns. Column one on the left has a label, which is the tag name or a section name. The middle column has the date. (The middle column is omitted for some entries.) The right-hand column has the other information for a tag. |
