Gedcom Publisher runs on Windows 10 or newer.Note 1

Gedcom Publisher uses Microsoft's .NET 8.0 Desktop Runtime package and you must install it separately or Gedcom Publisher will not run properly. If you have already installed .NET 8.0, or if your installation of MS Windows already includes .NET 8.n, you do not have to install it again.

Follow these instructions to install the .NET 8.0 Desktop Runtime package:

  1. Go to https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download/dotnet/8.0.
  2. Under the ".NET Desktop Runtime 8.0.n" heading, click the x64 link.

Make sure you choose the right section. You must see Desktop in the heading.

The version number will be "8.0.n" where "n" is a number. Install the most-recent version, the version with the highest number in "n".

Click x64. Gedcom Publisher is a 64-bit program and will only run on 64-bit versions of MS Windows.

  3. Save the downloaded file somewhere convenient.
  4. Run the installer.

Download the Gedcom Publisher Installer

The Gedcom Publisher installer is available via download only. After you purchase a license, the registration system will send you a link with your registration details and a link to download the Gedcom Publisher installer.

Your antivirus software may not trust the Gedcom Publisher installer because Gedcom Publisher has not yet earned enough reputation points to convince antivirus software makers that it can be trusted. You may have to instruct your antivirus software to allow you to download the installer if that software deems it suspicious.

You will need your registration data during the install process. Do not share your registration data with anyone else. You will need your registration data if you need to re-install the Gedcom Publisher program on a new or repaired computer, so keep it in safe place.

Install Gedcom Publisher

You do not have to install or uninstall any prior version before you install a new version.

To install the program, double-click the icon for the install program. There are about a half-dozen steps in the install process, but you can accept the default values by clicking the [Next] button.

Make sure you read the License Agreement and understand the ramifications before you click [I Agree].

In most cases, you do not have to uninstall any prior version before you install a new version. For some upgrades, the Gedcom Publisher News article announcing the new version will include a recommendation to uninstall the old version before installing the new. For the cleanest install, uninstall any existing version first.

You can install multiple versions on your PC if you install them into different folders, but all versions will share the most recent versions of some of the shared components that are stored in the Windows system folder.

Unlocking Gedcom Publisher

After you purchase Gedcom Publisher, you will receive an e-mail message that confirms the registration information you provided during the purchase process. The e-mail message will include a serial number.

Note Save the e-mail that contains your serial number and the rest of the registration information. If you lose the information, and you need to reinstall Gedcom Publisher, contact me and I will send you the information again.

When you start Gedcom Publisher it will open a dialog window where you must enter the registration information in order to unlock the program. The best way to do this is to copy and paste the information from the e-mail message into the data entry fields. Use Control-C to copy and Control-V to paste.

If you do not enter the registration information, Gedcom Publisher will be limited to producing a book for only a very small subset of the people in your dataset.

If your name or e-mail address change in the future, and for some reason you have to unlock Gedcom Publisher again, you must provide the information as it was when you purchased the program.

Notes

  1. The Gedcom Publisher installer will not prevent you from attempting to install under Windows 7 or previous, however, the program depends on components that are only present in Windows 10 and Windows 11.
