Overview

The File menu includes commands related to creating, opening, and saving Gedcom Publisher files; making and viewing books; and exiting the program.

New... (Ctl+N)

Closes the current Gedcom Publisher file, if any, and opens a standard file dialog to specify the location and name for a new Gedcom Publisher file.

Some of the values in a new Gedcom Publisher file are determined by the current user interface language. So, for example, if Customize > Language is set to "English (United States)", some text values in the new file will be in English. If Customize > Language is set to "Dutch (Belgium)", some text values in the new file will be in Dutch.

New (Language)...

After you choose a language from the sub-menu, Gedcom Publisher closes the current Gedcom Publisher file, if any, and opens a standard file dialog to create a new Gedcom Publisher file.

The new Gedcom Publisher file is initialized with strings in the language you choose from the sub-menu. This allows you to use Gedcom Publisher in English (United States), for example, but the localized strings in the new Gedcom Publisher file will be in the other language.

Open... (Ctl+O)

Closes the current Gedcom Publisher file, if any, and opens a standard file dialog to open an existing Gedcom Publisher file.

Recent Files >

The Recent Files sub-menu contains a list of up to 20 recently-opened Gedcom Publisher files. Selecting one of the file names opens that file.

Save (Ctl+S)

Saves the current Gedcom Publisher file.

Save As...

Saves a copy of the current Gedcom Publisher file under a new name, copies the contents of the Input (-i) folder, and creates a new Output (-o) folder.

Use the Save As... command with caution. If you save over an existing Gedcom Publisher file, Gedcom Publisher will delete the contents of the existing Input (-i) and Output (-o) folders.

Close

Closes the current Gedcom Publisher file.

Reload Data File (Ctl+G)

Reloads the data from the current data file.

For GEDCOM input files, use this command if you have changed the file by re-exporting from your genealogy application while Gedcom Publisher is running.

For TMG input files, use this command if you have changed the data by opening the project in TMG while Gedcom Publisher is running.

Make Book (Ctl+M)

Makes the book according to the current setting of the properties and creates the ".epub" file.

You can stop Gedcom Publisher in the middle of making a book by clicking the [Cancel] button in the background process progress window. This is useful if you have a large book and you want to stop the process to make a change to one of the options.

Browse Book (Ctl+B)

Opens the EPUB book using one of the third-party viewers listed in the submenu.

When Gedcom Publisher starts, it attempts to locate EPUB viewer programs on your PC. Each viewer that it finds is added to the File > Browse Book submenu.

If there are no entries in the submenu, then Gedcom Publisher did not find any EPUB viewers. If you have an EPUB viewer, you will have to open the EPUB file from within that program. If you do not have an EPUB viewer, you should consider using calibre.

See the Tools help page for more information about using third-party programs with Gedcom Publisher.

Convert Book

Converts the EPUB book to another format using one of the converters listed in the submenu.

When Gedcom Publisher starts, it attempts to locate EPUB converter programs on your computer. Each converter that it finds is added to the File > Convert Book submenu.

If there are no entries in the submenu, then Gedcom Publisher did not find any EPUB converters. See the Tools for instructions on how to add a converter to the File > Convert Book submenu.

Many converter programs are command-line programs that run in the background and do not open any windows. When you choose a command in the File > Convert Book submenu, Gedcom Publisher starts the converter program and shows a status window.

When the converter completes, Gedcom Publisher closes the status window. The output file created by the converter will be in the same folder as the .gpfile for the current book. The output file name is the same as the name of the .gpfile name of the current book. The output file type varies according to the converter program.

See the Tools help page for more information about using third-party programs with Gedcom Publisher.

Exit

Closes the current Gedcom Publisher file, if any, and exits the program.
