Properties

Pronoun Substitution

Gedcom Publisher may be configured to use a pronoun in place of a person's name when rendering person name variables. A name variable is eligible to be rendered as a pronoun when these conditions are met:

  1. The variable must refer to the subject, the person whose person entry is being written.
  2. The variable must be creating the first output of the sentence template.
  3. The variable must be a full name variable.

Variables that yield the first name or some other subset of the name are not eligible.

  4. The variable must not include an option that requires the full name to be rendered.

Several programs have variables that require a full name, or options that may be added to a name variable to force the full name to be rendered.

If the above conditions are met, Gedcom Publisher will apply an additional rule that is determined by the Pronoun Substitution property. The rules are described in the list below. The rules are listed in "less pronouns" to "more pronouns" order.

Never
Gedcom Publisher will never substitute a pronoun for the subject's name.
Last person
Gedcom Publisher will substitute a pronoun for the subject's name when the subject was the last person referenced by a name variable.
Last person of same gender
Gedcom Publisher will substitute a pronoun for the subject's name when the subject was the last person referenced by a name variable, or when an intervening person had the opposite gender from the subject.

This rule addresses a common occurrence where a subject shares several events with a spouse. This rule is the default.

Always except first
Gedcom Publisher will always substitute a pronoun for the subject's name except for the first reference to the subject's name in a Tag Set.
Always
Gedcom Publisher will always substitute a pronoun for the subject's name.

Suffix Delimiter

The Suffix Delimiter property affects name formatting. It determines the characters that appear between a surname and a suffix. The default is "Comma and space".

Space
Inserts a space between the surname and suffix, for example, "John Smith Jr."
Comma and space
Inserts a comma and space between the surname and suffix, for example, "John Smith, Jr."

The Suffix Delimiter property does not apply to TMG projects. Gedcom Publisher uses TMG Name Styles to format names.
